Earth’s wormhole. (Art installation at Nikola Lenivets)

The Earth’s wormhole is a translation of the synchronic movement of the earth revolving the sun and through space  in a galactic perspective.

The installation is an intuitive plotted trajectory of these two movements; although the passing of a day and night is not necessary to contain within it, because we are aware of it, on a daily basis, and we may spot it on the spiral walls at daylight. 

The description of the Earth’s pathway is a spiral around the curved path of the sun, which turns out to become the vertical axis of the spiral void; unseen, but experienced inside the installation with the end period of the winter sunlight.

As a void the volume is carved out of hay and from the bare ground surfacing up to the south of the hay volume.

If we trace a line from the sun’s equator to the earth’s equator all the way through-in the spinning axis, this would be 113 degrees. 

If the vertical rotational axis of Earth was exactly perpendicular to the sun, and if there was no inclined north-south axis on Earth, there would be no winter seasons and we would have; two frozen North and South poles

The earth’s vertical axis (North-South) spinning movement at an angle of 23 degrees with respect to the sun and the revolving movement around the sun, makes the transition from winter to spring; possible. 

The precise earth’s North-South vertical axis angle can only be measured on one cycle of sunrises 365 to be somehow exact at the Earth’s equator between the 21st’s of Junes dates; where the 2 equinoxes  in a year cycle coincide with the east-west direction of the compass. 

We know of the rotation cycle of the Earth because we sleep at night and we wake up in daylight for most of the planet. What we did not know was its spinning angle until “Spanish discovered the area of Quito in Ecuador” maybe around 17 hundreds when they found it out from indigenous people. I think Egyptians were ahead in time anyway. 

The monument is a description of us humans on a spaceship called Earth, on the barbecue mode, using astronaut  terminology, being grilled by the sun every time we face it, if you all wish to see it in this way.

Whether, it is a vector force or a force field, gravity maybe what makes the Earth spin in itself, forces we don’t fully understand in physics maybe intuitively known. Here in the installation we will try to ponder and describe  them in an experimental way as an act of art and research.

The spiral starts in a leveled inclined disc on the ground, lifting and plotting Earth’s trajectory from the ground and following the path of the sun as an axial arch towards the window opening that points out at the sun’s elevation at more or less 36 degrees sun’s elevation from the ground, on the exact date of the transition to Spring in Nikola Lenivets. 

The spiral’s volume is built as a negative space that generates a void inside a wooden truss-box confining hay. The wormhole is inside the hay stack and allows light  through onto the ground tilted disc.

The structural box on the outside holds up the hay, and spirals down to the ground following two angles:36 first, and then, 58 degrees. The first one is the elevation of the sun on the Equinox on the 21st of March at its highest point; and the second is the elevation on the 21st of June of the Summer Solstice in Nikola Lenivets.

The axis of the spiral is an intuitive curve plot of the trajectory of the sun and the earth through the galaxy. Giving the viewer an understanding of the passing of time in cycles. It should have 70 loops to be at human scale.

Constructive System 

The roof and facade is made of structural wood that will have the following geometrical principle parallel lines have the same corresponding angles. 

The outer volume is orthogonal and its edges will intersect at the same angle. flat wooden pieces solid on the inside, the unions are easy to solve because they will contain the same angle of the edge with respect to the rectangular surfaces of the volume.

If the facade needs more wood pieces will be simply added onsite because the hay will serve as a support system, as a scaffolding for the installation and also holding the whole volume together while the spiral is perfected on the inside with other elements.

Stainless steel earth orbits.

72 architects or designers in pairs, each pair will be in charge of giving shape to 2 circular orbits according to the plan of the spiral.

They should be seamlessly coupled however they decide. A task for mechanical engineers will be solved by architects in a learning attempt including myself.
